Owner's Guide
Affectionate, resolute and courageous, Bulldogs are devoted to their owners. They are sociable with strangers, but they need careful socializing to be tolerant of other dogs. The design of their bodies causes them many difficulties and they are not very active or lively
as a result.
Originally bred: for bull-and bear-baiting and dog-fighting.
Special characteristics
The Bulldog is alert and friendly.
Exercise requirements
Low. Restricted breathing and an ungainly body sap energy.
Attitude to
Owners: affectionate, devoted
Children: good
Other pets: good
Strangers: friendly
Unfamiliar dogs: can be problematic
Perfect owner
Affectionate, tolerant owner who will enjoy this characterful but slow companion.
Potential problems
Tends to be aggressive to other dogs if provoked.
The shortened face results in an undershot jaw leaving the bottom teeth sticking out below the top teeth.
The folds of skin above the nose and around the tail need regular cleaning. This dog's shortened muzzle may cause lack of saliva control, and can make breathing difficult, especially in hot weather. It is likely to snore. Bitches cannot give birth naturally due to the puppies' large heads, so a Caesarean section is necessary.
