Owner's Guide

Domestic Breed: A recently created breed in which a typical British Shorthair Cat has been enhanced by the addition of a typical Siamese coat pattern. It should not be confused with the American cat referred to as the 'Colorpoint Shorthair'. The latter is essentially a Siamese Cat with unusual colouring on its points.

Because of this confusion and because the Colourpoint British Shorthair Cat has such a cumbersome name, a new title will no doubt be forthcoming for this attractive breed.

Appearance: The same as for the British Shorthair Cat, except for the coat pattern. The dark extremities - the Siamese points - may be present in any of the usual colours. The short body has a stocky, cobby shape, with strong, thick legs, rounded head, large feet and heavy tail.

History: This breed was artificially developed by careful crossing experiments. The programme was started in England in the 1980s but the breed was not formally recognized until 1991. The aim was to 'borrow' the pointed coat pattern of the Siamese without any of the other oriental qualities, such as angular body shape.

Personality: This cat remains essentially a typical British Shorthair, with a personality to match. Despite gaining the Siamese colouring, it has not acquired the Siamese character.

Colour forms: All the various Siamese point colours are acceptable, and many have already appeared, including the following: Blue-Cream Point; Blue Point; Chocolate Point; Cream Point; Red Point; Seal Point; Seal Tortie Point.

Breed Club:

The Colourpoint British Shorthair Cat Club. Address: 77 Hallsfield Road, Bridgewood, Chatham, Kent, ME5 9RT.
