Portuguese Water Dogs are energetic, self-willed and courageous.
Friendly and playful, Portuguese Water Dogs need plenty to do to use up their energy. Originally, the hair on their legs and part of the tail was clipped to reduce the drag while they were swimming.

This dog's profuse coat requires regular grooming to prevent mats from forming, and regular clipping. Show breeders clip the coat on the back legs and tail, but there is no need for pet owners to do this.
