Covered in distinctive folds of loose skin, many individuals of this breed pay the price for the fashionable excess of skin with painful eye problems and skin conditions. Good-natured and wilful, Shar Peis are independent and aloof and require early socialization to be tolerant of other dogs.
Originally bred: for dog-fighting and hunting.

The excessive wrinkles can cause painful eye conditions. Daily cleaning of the deep skin is essential to keep the coat in good condition.
