Short Haired Cat Breeds
The earliest cat shows in the final decades of the 19th century lumped all cats with short coats into one category 'Short-haired cats'. There were some that were named simply by their fur colour, while others has distinctive breed names like Siamese or Manx. As time went by the distinctive breeds were more strongly recognised as such and this left a mixed bag of short-haired cats, separated from one another purely by their coat colour. These cats were in need of a collective name that established them as a particular breed range and so the British Shorthair was arrived at. On the continent, they became the European Shorthair and in the United States, the American shorthair.
