The Importance of Cat Insurance
No one likes to think of something bad happening to their pet, but accidents and illness can unfortunately happen at any time, and often result in extremely expensive vet bills. The good news is that there are many affordable cat insurance plans available. Each plan will offer different coverage and benefits, so it is important to read all of the information carefully before deciding which plan is best for you and your cat.
Accidents
Cats are naturally curious creatures, and as such can often find themselves in dangerous situations. Although cats are normally very agile creatures and able to extract themselves from tricky scenarios better than we humans could ever do, accidents do still happen, whether it is being hit by a car, trapping their tail in a shed door, or getting stuck in wet tar. The emergency treatment for an injury can reach hundreds of pounds. Check your policy carefully to find out what is covered. Pay particular attention to if you are asked if your cat is an indoor cat as this may mean that they are excluded from any compensation if their injury happens outside of your home.
Quarantine / Boarding
Have you thought about what would happen to your cat if you became ill? What if you had to move suddenly due to a family emergency? Some cat insurance will pay for quarantine or boarding fees if you need to lodge your pet due to unforeseen circumstances.
Long term illness
Be aware that most cat insurance policies will not cover medical treatment for an illness indefinitely. There is normally a cap on either costs or time related to a specific condition. Policies can also place limits on the number of times you can claim each year, or the number of conditions that they will cover.
Loss/Theft
When you think of cat insurance, it is usually medical expenses that come to mind, but did you know that some cat insurance policies can help if your cat goes missing? Some policies will reimburse the costs of advertising for the return of your pet, and may also offer compensation for the loss. This can be particularly important if your cat is a pedigree, show or breeding cat.
Death
More costly cat insurance plans offer benefits in the event of the premature death of your pet. This payout can help to cover the costs of a memorial, time taken off work or the purchase of another cat.
Routine health care such as vaccinations, teeth cleanings and check ups are rarely covered by cat insurance, so don't forget to add these regular vet visits to your budget for your cat's health care.
Cat insurance is no different from any other purchase, in that you get what you pay for. A higher monthly premium will probably give you more comprehensive coverage and a higher maximum payout per year than a budget plan which may only cover a percentage of the costs of emergency medical treatment. Think carefully about what you can afford to pay towards insurance each month, compared to what you could pay in a lump sum to a vet should your cat suddenly need expensive procedures or care.
