Domestic Breed. A new American cat that takes the first part of its name from New York State, where it originated, and the second part from the rich chocolate brown colour of its coat.
Appearance: The body proportions are similar to those of the Siamese, but it is bigger. The long coat comes in a variety of chocolate colours and patterns.
History: This recent breed arose in 1983 on a farm belonging to Janet Chiefari. The foundation stock consisted of a pair of house cats of uncertain ancestry. The male was long-haired and black; the female was long-haired and black and white. Somewhere in their past lurked a trace of Siamese.
Because of the confused genetic background of this breed, it is generally frowned upon by the official feline organizations. As a result it remains a rare breed, and as recently as the 1990s there were no more than 100 specimens in existence.
Personality: Terms used to describe this breed include: Energetic, lively, playful, enthusiastic, agile and cheerful.
