Dog lovers know that if you have your pets in the house, you will also have additional cleaning duties. One area of the home that really suffers when dogs are in the house is the floor and the carpet. Keeping the carpet, tile, linoleum and wood flooring as clean as possible will help your dog stay health and happy and free from a variety of nasty little creepy crawlies and possible health risks.

Fleas, Mites And Ticks

Whilst no one wants to have to deal with fleas, ticks and mites, if you have dogs or cats in the home, you really do have to think about them. These horrible little blood sucking insects will happily make a home anywhere that is warm and dry. Your carpeting, the area around your skirting boards or the grooves in out of the way areas of wood flooring or tiles, are perfect for these tiny insects to live. In many cases, if the insect is in a dormant state, even insecticides or herbal repellents will not have an impact on the population.

Regular washing, steam cleaning, sweeping or vacuuming of the carpet or flooring is essential to remove all insects that are problematic for both you and your pets.

Allergens

Dogs can have allergies to dust, dirt and debris that collects on floors and carpets. Since dogs are much more sensitive to airborne allergens than humans, even small amounts of dirt, dust, chemicals, perfumes or cleaning solutions left on the floor can cause respiratory problems or skin allergies. Cleaning with hypoallergenic cleaners that are non-scented is a good option. You may also want to switch to traditional types of cleaning products, such as vinegar and water that have no chemicals and no possible reactions.

Choking Hazards

Odds and ends and little bits of string or thread that get caught on the edges of carpets and throw rugs, or that accumulate under the couch or coffee table are also a potential danger for small dogs and puppies. Toy or small dogs and puppies that eat these items can find that they lodge in the back of the throat, or block the oesophagus or air passages if inhaled.

Routine cleaning of flooring and carpets will prevent these issues from being a problem for your dog. Routine grooming and bathing of your pooch will help to reduce the amount of cleaning required, especially when combined with ongoing flea, tick and mite treatment programmes.
