Q: How do I stop my cat sitting in my bathtub and sink?
Q: How do I stop my cat sitting in my bathtub and sink?
A: The answer depends on why he is doing it! There are two possible reasons for this behaviour.
Firstly, he may be thirsty. Does he have easy access to a water bowl? Make sure his water bowl has plenty of fresh water, and change it daily. You may need to provide him with more than one water bowl, especially if there are other pets in the household. If he is getting older and is no longer able to move around well or jump easily, his water bowl will need to be at ground level. If your house is on two levels, there should be one water bowl on each floor.
This may be a sign that he is drinking more than he normally does (i.e. he is seeking out extra water), in which case a vet visit would be in order to check for the reasons behind that. Common causes include diabetes and kidney problems.
Secondly, this behaviour can be a sign of cystitis. In this case I would expect your cat to actually urinate a small amount (sometimes just a few drops) in the tub or in the sink. The urine may be blood-tinged, or have quite a strong smell to it. If this is the case, he should see a vet as soon as possible as cystitis can be life threatening, especially if your cat is male.
