Kitten Health Warnings

If you are the owner of a new kitten, it pays to keep an eye out for its health at all times. Younger cats can be more susceptible to disease, and by looking out for any important symptoms, you can then take them to the vet to sort out any problems a lot faster. While cats cannot tell you if they are sick, there are a few obvious signs that you can watch out for. Unfortunately, without a visit to the vet, there is no real way to tell if your kitten is seriously ill or has a minor ailment.

  • Fading Kitten Syndrome: This is simply a kitten's failure to thrive in the home environment. The animal may lose weight or develop obvious symptoms such as diarrhea or dehydration.
  • Cold-Like Symptoms: Sneezing, a mild fever and a state of lethargy are signs that your kitten has an upper respiratory disease. You may also see moist patches around the nose or eyes.
  • Auditory Symptoms: If your kitten has a persistent cough, is wheezing when it breathes or is exhibiting a raspy meow, it may have developed a lower respiratory disease.
  • Infection: Since a kitten's immune system is developing, they are usually more susceptible to infection. Common signs are a green/yellow discharge or excessive tears around the eyes, as well as a pungent aroma from inside the ears.
  • Urinary Symptoms: If your kitten is having trouble urinating or is visiting the litter box more frequently than usual, it may be having trouble with its urinary tract. You may also notice blood in the kitty litter or your kitten crying in pain whenever it urinates.
  • Diarrhea and Constipation: While these two symptoms often just indicate that your kitten's diet needs improving, if they remain for a long time, there is a higher chance that your cat is actually sick and requires an examination from your local vet.

There are a few symptoms in which it is important to get your kitten to the vet as soon as possible. If your cat is finding it difficult to breath or it suddenly collapses, you should visit the vet immediately. Likewise, if your kitten seems confused or is exhibiting an unusual tilt to its head, this is also cause for concern as there may be a brain injury present.

By keeping an eye out for any of the above symptoms, you can then take your kitten in for treatment as soon as anything happens. This will reduce the chances of your cat developing anything too serious and keep them happy and healthy for much longer. All it takes is a vigilant eye and the right knowledge of what to look out for and your kitten can be kept well for a long time to come.
