Q: Is wet food or dry food better for my pet? How do I know which one to feed them or is it best to mix?
A: A healthy dog or cat can be fed either wet or dry food, or a combination of the two, without any problems. We used to think dry food was better for pets' teeth, but it has recently been shown that it makes very little, if any, difference.
Dry food in general will result in firmer stools and better breath. This does vary a lot between pets though! Some pets like wet food much better than dry and vice versa, in which case it's usually easiest to feed whichever type of diet your pet prefers.
There are some medical conditions where wet diets are better, for example cystitis and kidney disease. Pets with mouth problems or those who have had many dental extractions will also find wet food easier to eat. Essentially, if your pet has no medical concerns you can feed either wet or dry. If they do have any problems you may wish to speak with your veterinary surgeon about which diet may be most appropriate.
