Q: My 10 month old puppy has torn and eaten the corner of the carpet, why would she do this?
Q: My puppy is 10 months old, and this morning I woke up and she has torn and eaten the corner out of the carpet. Which is unusual as she is usually well behaved other than she barks at everyone who walks by the garden. I was wondering if you had any reason's why she may do this?
A: There are a couple of possibilities here. Is there any chance someone spilled food on that section of the carpet? That may be the simple answer to your question, but I suspect the less likely one!
What is probably more likely is that your puppy is becoming a bit of a chewer. Adolescent puppies can go through a "naughty" stage where they start testing boundaries, much like teenagers! In this case, ongoing training will help you both get through this phase. Boredom is also a common reason for chewing, especially since this happened during the night. A solution here would be to leave out some interactive toys (Kongs, or puzzle balls) for the puppy overnight, so she can amuse herself if she is not able to sleep through until morning. You could also try to train her to sleep in a crate overnight.
If you need any help with the training aspect, your local veterinary surgery should have a list of behaviorists in your area.
I hope that helps!
