Q: My dog just had puppies a couple days ago. How long do I need to wait before getting her spayed?
A: You should wait until the puppies are completely weaned, which is usually around 8-9 weeks of age. Make sure that the mum does not get pregnant again the meantime, as some dogs will come into season very quickly after giving birth. Ideally keep her away from all male dogs until she is spayed.
Some vets do prefer to wait 3 months after the puppies are born before performing the procedure, so contact your own vet and they will be able to make the surgery appointment for you at the appropriate time.
