Q: My Maltese seems to have a real gurgly stomach. He acts fine but it is quite loud. Any suggestions?
A: A gurgly stomach may be normal for some dogs. It often happens if your dog is a scavenger and eats anything and everything he comes across! Occasionally the dog's diet is the problem and just does not completely agree with them. You could test this by temporarily changing his diet to see if the gurgling improves. If you do try to change his diet, just remember to do so gradually over 4-5 days in order to avoid giving him a tummy upset.
For some dogs, a gurgly stomach may be an indicator of a more serious problem, most commonly gastritis or inflammatory bowel disease. Most dogs will have other symptoms - occasional vomiting, diarrhoea, or slow weight loss. However, some dogs will have no other major symptoms at all to begin with, but will develop further symptoms as the disease progresses. These problems are treatable and most dogs respond very well.
If your dog does have any other symptoms, or if you are still worried, make an appointment to see your vet. A physical exam is a good place to start, and if there are any concerns the vet can run some tests to check for an underlying problem.
