Identification and your pet - How important is it?

If you have ever experienced the heartache of a missing pet then you might be thinking of ways to avoid this in the future. When taking on a pet it is important to realise that a pet is for life and with this comes responsibility. And part of this responsibility means ensuring that your pet can be adequately identified should they go missing!

Every year in the UK, thousands of pets go missing or are stolen. However, there is a national scheme that can help reunite owners with their missing pets if the pet is picked up by an animal warden or found and taken to a local rescue centre or vets.

The Kennel Club runs Petlog, a national database that promotes the microchipping of dogs, cats and even rabbits. A microchip is injected under the skin of your pet and is permanent. This microchip holds a unique number which is then entered onto the Petlog database, together with your contact details. For just a one off cost of £10 you can have access and make changes to your details for the lifetime of your pet, enabling you to change address should you move or even change contact details and address should you go on holiday. You can also add details of an additional carer. Every year, National Microchipping Month is held in June with special microchipping events held locally to you but you can get your pet microchipped at any other time too.

Petlog now holds the details of over 4 million pets nationwide and in 2009 were called on to help find or reunite over 100,000 pets with their owners. In addition to holding your contact details on their database, if your pet goes missing, they will send email alerts to vets and dog wardens in a 30 mile radius of your home. They will also supply lost pet posters for you to print out and put up in your area.

Getting your pet microchipped only costs about £15 and is a simple and quick procedure that can be carried out by your vet, dog warden or local rescue centre. Add to that the cost of the Petlog service at £10 and for just £25 in total your pet will be protected for life if they are lost or stolen and then found again. Isn't that worth it for peace of mind should your pet be missing?
