National Microchipping Month June 2010 - What it's all about!
The seventh annual microchipping month is here June 2010 sees a nationwide campaign to highlight the importance of getting your pet microchipped! So why is microchipping so important? How can you get involved? And where will the events be held?
Imagine you are taking your dog for a walk, you call them and they just don't come back! You have lost your pet or, sadly, someone has taken them. Imagine you let your cat outside and they don't come back for their dinner! Your pet is missing and you just don't know if you will ever see them again. The heartache of not knowing what has happened to them is terrible. However, to give your pet a better chance of finding their way home to you if they are found or picked up, you need to consider getting your pet microchipped.
The small microchip is inserted under the skin and has a barcode number which is held on a national database. If your pet is found then they can be scanned and, hey presto, returned to you!
June is National Microchipping Month and throughout the country there will be special events held where you can take your pet to be microchipped. Getting your pet microchipped is part of being a responsible pet owner and is a way of permanent identification for your pet. Your details are held on the national Petlog database, supported by the Kennel Club, but this is not restricted to dogs. Cats and even rabbits can be microchipped! Your details can be updated easily online and it is very important to remember to do this if you have moved or are on holiday.
Many veterinary practices, pet rescue centres and training clubs around the country will be holding special microchipping events throughout June. They will be advertised in the local press but, if your pet has not been microchipped, then give your vet etc. a call and ask them if and when they are holding an event.
If you yourself are holding an event, make sure that you have refreshments available, plenty of parking, tell the local press and put up posters. Make sure that you have considered other things such as disabled access and insurance if required.
For the small outlay of a microchip, around £15, and a bit of time to go along and get your pet microchipped, you will have peace of mind in knowing that, should your pet go missing, you will have a much better chance of you both being reunited!
