Be Prepared for Your New Puppy!

Just like babies, puppies need a bit of special care and attention. You can't just go and pick a puppy up without doing a little preparation in advance, as you would with a baby. Think about it - while we eagerly await for a new baby to make its appearance into our family and daily lives, we prepare everything from clothing, to the right colour room, to cradles and so much more. All our friends help us prepare by bringing over gifts, all for the baby, from toys to clothing to much more, even if they are attending our birthday parties.

With a puppy it is similar, as you will need to prepare by purchasing some items to make his and your life easier - especially since you will most likely be inseparable for the first few days, and you won't find it in your heart to leave him alone for too long! Therefore, instead of waiting around for your puppy to arrive, it's best you get ready, which will also provide the added advantage that time will go by faster as you are focusing on something else, rather than how many more hours until the puppy will arrive!

The first thing you need to prepare is food, of course, as well as bowls for water and food. You may want to consult a vet, or better still the breeder, regarding what type of food to give your puppy. It's best to keep them on the food they are used to for at least a few days and make changes to their diet slowly and gradually. But often it is enough if you buy a quality brand of pet food from your local pet store that states specifically it is for young dogs the same age as your own, and change over at a sensible rate. There are some clever systems available nowadays to provide fresh water for your puppy, with a small pump to circulate and filter the water inside a fountain like watering bowl for your pup. The advantage to this system is that the water is constantly filtered and oxygenated making it very healthy, however you may want to keep a close eye on your pup as he may need to spend a penny quite often if he is drinking a lot of water, as their bladders are very small at that age. Plus water is usually attractive to puppies, and they may play with it more than drink it, and make a terrible mess!

You should also consider finding a good vet before you need one, because you may find it quite difficult trying to visit different vts with your puppy in tow. Often, the best way to find a good vet is to simply ask around. Asking family members or friends who have pets will make it easier for you to find one you will be comfortable, with since it is very important that you find a good veterinarian. Remember that you will be making quite a few trips with your pooch to the surgery in the first few months for vaccinations, so if you haven't already, you should buy a seat cover for your car (especially a waterproof one, since accidents will happen), especially in the beginning until your puppy gets used to riding in your car.

You should also consider purchasing a collar and leash, however remember to buy something that is adjustable, since your puppy will grow quite quickly and you don't want to end up buying a new collar every week. For the first few months, a harness might be a better option, until he gets used to the vast outdoors and the idea that you are walking him and no amount of pulling will get you to go in his direction.

Toys are also vital, but make sure you buy something that has very few moving parts so your new family member doesn't end up choking. Things such as rubber balls, bones and even a few plush toys are good ideas. Only get a squeaky toy if you have nerves of steel, because it can become rather irritating, especially since puppies have a lot of energy and you may find yourself up at all hours of the night playing with your new friend!
