Cool Names for Winter Puppies
The air is crisper now. The nip in the air means boots, mitts, a scarf and a hat. It is time to bundle up when you take your new canine companion for a walk. It is an exciting time. You have a winter puppy. The question now is, "What do you call him or her?"
Why not name your puppy in honour of this season? Pick something that will always remind you of the day he/she came home. This is not a daunting task. The names are as varied as the personality of your dog. It can be popular or rare. Still, whatever you decide upon, try to stick to a simple but effective monicker. Dogs respond best to short-and-sweet.
There is a variety of basic names celebrating the season. The most obvious one is "Winter." You can differentiate it by spelling it "Wynter." Depending upon your puppy, you may also write it as Whynter - with a stress on the whine. Other common names are Holly and Hollis (lives by the Holly Tree), Rosemary, Ivy, Ivey and Ivalyn - all refer to seasonal plants. There is also Elf. Weather-related names include Flurry, Storm or Storme, Snowflake and, of course, Snowball.
If you want a name that is a little more unusual, consider Elvey (Elf Warrior) and Elvina (Elfin). Pearl is also acceptable. Angel is another name that comes to mind. Be careful when using this one. Most puppies are only angelic when they are sleeping.
There are also more exotic names retaining a seasonal feeling about them. Merlin has a mystical ring. It is also appropriate for this time of year. Cernunos refers to an ancient God, a Hunter of the woods. You can shorten it to Herne or Cerne. On the other side of the spectrum is Krista or Kristanne - a follower of Christ, and Winnie (Winnifred or Winifreith - Friend of Peace). Paying homage to another reason for the season is the name Kringle (short for Kris Kringle or Father Christmas). Noel is an acceptable name for a bringer of joy. Solstice is also a reminder of the season as is Yule. As long as it is not "You'll be sorry," this is a fine name for a winter puppy.
Since most puppies have a close affinity for trees - particularly the males, why not consider a tree or plant associated with winter and winter activities. Consider Chayce (huntsman) for an active dog. There are also Oakes, Ches (Chesnut), Hazel, Perry (Pear tree) and Missy/Misty (Mistletoe). Obviously, there is no lack of choice when you come to naming your Winter puppy. These are but a few of the cool names from which you can pick the right one.
