What to Look for at Kitten Adoption Centres

Adopting a kitten from a rescue centre is a great way to bring a cat into your home. Each year, hundreds of unwanted kittens end up in adoption centres around the country, all desperate to find a loving owner. However, not all rescue centres offer the same level of care for the cats that they take in. Here are some the top ten things to consider when choosing a kitten from an adoption centre:

1. Staff knowledge.
Do the staff seem knowledgeable about cats in general as well as the history and circumstance of any particular kitten you are interested in? Can they answer all of the questions that you have about adopting and caring for a new kitten?

2. Staff friendliness.
The attitude of the staff at a pet adoption centre can have a big effect on your experience of getting to know, and choosing a kitten to adopt. You may want to visit the kittens several times before making your final decision, and you should feel welcome to do so.

3. Paperwork.
Find out what paperwork comes with the kitten. Some homes will offer a guarantee on the health of a kitten. Return policies also vary. Read through any paperwork carefully and make sure you understand your responsibilities as a new pet owner.

4. Living areas.
A reputable adoption centre should have clean and sanitary living conditions for all of their kittens. The cages should not be overcrowded, and there should be plenty of fresh water available.

If you have any doubts about how the centre is being run, ask to see their licenses. Remember that if they are a charity they should have a valid registration.

6. Kitten health.
Although most kittens may be strays, they should be in good health before they are allowed to be viewed by the public, for adoption. You should also enquire about any medical treatment such as vaccinations that the kitten will need after you have taken him home.

7. Checks.
Don't be offended if you are asked to complete certain checks such as an inspection of your living space. These are carried out to make sure that each kitten goes to a safe and loving home.

8. Cost.
The costs of adopting a kitten from a rescue centre can vary. Some shelters may ask for a donation, while others may charge a set fee than can include basic medication such as worming tablets and vaccinations.

9. Instincts.
Don't ignore your instincts. If you do not feel comfortable in a center, or don't bond with a particular kitten don't feel pressured into adopting one.

10. Lastly, once you have returned home with your new pet, don't forget all of the kittens left behind. There are many ways that you can help your local kitten adoption centre, from fundraising to donating food and every little helps.
