A flat fit for a cat
Source: Looking Glass
If your kitty is an indoor animal, you will need to deck out your flat so that it is cat-friendly. By providing enough entertainment and stimulation for your feline pal, you will reduce the chances of them exhibiting any destructive behaviour, such as clawing furniture and urinating on beds.
A Taste of the Outdoors
Cats instinctively like to stalk their prey and one of the easiest ways to cater to this need is to live in a flat that has ledges by the windows. If there is a view of the street or your back garden, this is even better as your cat will then be able to sit there gazing through the glass at any birds, insects and other small animals that they may see. Consider this the equivalent of feline television. Even though there is only one channel, they will never get bored!
Cat-Friendly Furniture
As for indoor entertainment, purchase your cat a large scratching post or tree. This will encourage them to safely sharpen their claws without damaging any of your precious furniture. A cat condo is also a good idea, giving them plenty of places to hide and explore within the confines of your home. These products are great if you own a dog and want to provide kitty with a comfortable, high-up place to rest where your pooch cannot disturb them.
Interactive Toys
Constant change is also a requirement to stimulate your kitty and ensure that they remain happy and healthy. Purchase a range of toys that both you and your cat can play with and switch these around every few weeks. Anything that emulates the action of hunting will be a good idea and items such as fake mice and balls with feathers attached to them will recreate the act of stalking and capturing prey all within the comfort of your household.
Friendly on the Nose
One essential item for the cat-friendly apartment is odour-reducing kitty litter. Remember that you are living in the building with several other tenants and by eliminating any harsh smells that may be created when your cat goes to the bathroom, you will thus reduce the chances of anyone complaining about your pet. Keep your cat and your landlord on good terms with each other and your feline friend will be able to stay there for a lot longer.
By following all of the above advice, you will make sure that your cat remains mentally and physically healthy while being stuck within the confines of your apartment. Remember that cats naturally want to hunt and explore and, by creating an indoor environment where they can do this, you will then satisfy their base needs and keep them happy without having to let them outside.
