Why do cats sit in windows for hours?
Source: ozmafan
While there are as many cat personalities as there are breeds, we guarantee that there are quite a few animals that enjoy sitting on the windowsill simply staring out through the glass for hours on end. Pet owners need not worry as this is normal behaviour for cats, but there may be those of you who would like to know exactly what their furry friend is thinking while they sit there watching everything that is going on through the window pane. There are three main reasons why this sort of pastime is enjoyed so much by cats all over the world.
Hunting Instinct
Domesticated cats come from a long line of dangerous hunters, such as lions, panthers and cheetahs, which are known for their prowess in stalking their prey silently through the wilderness. This instinct comes to your cat naturally and leads to seemingly odd behaviour such as looking out through the window for hours and hours. Windowsills are typically elevated places and offer a wide view that is suitable for watching and waiting for the perfect prey to come along. Cats have been known to sit immobile in the one spot simply waiting for birds and mice, and the windowsill offers them a very effective place to do this.
Surveying Their Territory
Cats are fiercely territorial animals, each with their own area that they will guard with their life. If your cat is sitting at the window simply watching, he or she may be keeping an eye out for any intruders who may be trespassing on their grounds. Whether they are allowed to roam your front and back gardens or whether they are restricted to being indoor cats does not matter. It is more important that your pet keeps themselves informed as to who is in their territory and whether they are friends or enemies. If your cat has the right sort of personality, they could even act as a feline watchdog and warn you of any strangers approaching through their long window watching sessions.
Plain Old Curiosity
Finally, as is typical in most felines, your cat may simply want to know absolutely everything that is going on outside as they sit there staring through the glass. Cats are naturally inquisitive animals and by sitting on windowsills they can see everything that is going on. Your cat stares through the window for much the same reason as you stare at the television watching the news. You both want to remain informed about what is going on in your world. Whether they are watching a bug crawl across the glass, the neighbour's children playing or a person walking their dog, you can be sure that it is of immense importance to your feline friend.
